Research Topics
SCORE'S Topics of Research
SCORE is at the forefront of pediatric cardiology research. We support many areas of research within the cardiology umbrella. These topics include but are not limited to:
Congenital Heart Defects/Disease (CHD)
Heart problems that are present at birth.
Electrophysiology
Care of the heart’s electrical system, to diagnose and treat abnormal heart rhythms or arrhythmias.
Cardiac Surgery
Surgery on the heart and related structures.
Cardiac Intensive Care
Specialized area for critically ill patients requiring cardiac care.
Cardiac Catheterization
Cardiac catheterization is a procedure where a long, thin tube (catheter) is guided through a blood vessel in order to diagnose and sometimes treat heart problems.
Cardiomyopathy
Cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle that makes it harder for the heart to pump blood to the rest of the body.
Echocardiography
An ultrasound of the heart to examine the heart’s chambers and valves, examine how the muscles are working, and to track blood flow.
Cardiac Transplantation
A heart transplant is a surgery to replace a failing heart with a healthy one from an organ donor.
Exercise Promotion in CHD
Physical activity is important for a healthy heart. Some of our studies explore how to encourage physical activity as well as types of activity that are effective and safe for patients living with a heart history.
Transition
Transition from pediatric to adult care is important for patients living with heart defects or disease. Adolescent patients should be prepared with knowledge of their heart, as well as self-management and self-advocacy skills needed for lifelong management of their disease.
Education
Teaching patients and caregivers about their heart and heart history.
