Taking Part in a Research Study

Somewhere along your cardiac journey you may have the opportunity to take part in a research study. By voluntering, you are contributing to better outcomes and healthier futures for patients and families!

The following steps are a general guide to what’s involved:

Search our Currently Recruiting Studies

There are many ongoing research studies within the Stollery Cardiac Program recruiting research participants. Each study will have a different research question, eligibility criteria, and study tasks that will need to be completed. You can search our currently recruiting studies to find a study that is right for you!

Connect with our Research Coordinators

We are here to help you find a study that you may be eligible for, to learn more about taking part, and to ask questions.

Participate in a Study

Taking part in research at the Stollery and University of Alberta is voluntary, and if you decline it will not affect the care you receive.

Every study is different, but taking part in a research study may include the following:

  • Meeting with a Research Coordinator to learn about a specific study
  • Providing written permission
  • Ensuring you’re a good fit for the study
  • Completing a questionnaire or participating in an interview
  • Some studies involve bloodwork or other testing
  • Giving feedback to the research team:
    • Let the research team know how you are feeling through the course of the study
    • At any time, if you would no longer like to take part, you may withdraw from a study. The study team will understand and complete only tasks that are necessary to ensure your safety.

Hear from a Participant

As a CHD kid myself, I’ve been so honored to work with the people involved with research as it has allowed me learn more about congenial heart diseases in general and how I can help my community.” – Research Participant
