How long will it take before I can get started with a new research project?
One of the biggest stumbling blocks for people in the beginning is not realizing how long it actually takes to get research up and running. There is a significant amount of preparation required prior to submitting your proposal to ethics. In addition, you may other approvals or agreements, depending on the nature of your research. Will a retrospective design automatically give me a waiver of consent?
No, a retrospective study design will not automatically give you a waiver of consent. However, a waiver of consent may be requested from the REB. See more information on use of health information in research and requesting a waiver of consent.
Can I access Netcare for research?
Information from Netcare can be used for research under certain conditions, if approved by Health System Access.
Can I use my personal laptop for research?
When considering using your personal laptop, you need to think about what information you are accessing, transmitting, and storing. When working with any identifying health information, you are required to work behind an AHS network firewall. This means working from an AHS computer onsite, or using an AHS issued remote access FOB on your laptop.
Access and use of identifying health information is guided by the Health Information Act, AHS Policies, and UofA data management procedures.
What is REDCap?
REDCap is a Research Electronic Data Capture application. It is available through WCHRI to WCHRI members, UofA researchers and their collaborators. We recommend using REDCap for web-based data collection, data management and data security.
